    Keeping Children Healthy

    * The well-being of children is inextricably linked
to the well-being of the entire family

Because children must be healthy and well nourished in order to learn, SETA Head Start pays particular attention to health. SETA Head Start ensures that all enrolled children have timely immunizations and screenings for cognitive development, basic health, speech and language, hearing, vision, and dental health.

    Physical Examinations

physicalIn accordance with SETA Head Start Performance Standards, Community Care Licensing and the Child Health and Disability Program (CHDP) each child enrolled in SETA Head Start is required to receive a physical examination. Family service workers at each Early Learning Center are available to provide information and resources to assist families and connect them with medical services offered within the community.

For a listing of all required health events for children ages 0-5, please view the Head Start Periodicity Table, which is based on the CHDP Periodicity Table.

    Medical and Dental Insurance

SETA Head Start recognizes the importance of each child having a medical and dental home. SETA Head Start collaborates with Sacramento Children's Health Initiative, "Cover the Kids", to assist families with resource information on affordable health care (including Healthy Families) in the Sacramento County area.

    Immunization

The SETA Head Start Program ensures that all enrolled children meet the minimum standards for immunizations in accordance with the California School Immunization Law.  Information and resources on immunization clinics are available at each SETA Head Start Early Learning Center.

    EZ-IZ Child Immunization System

The EZ-IZ Immunization System is an online tool created in collaboration between the SETA Head Start Health/Nutrition Services Unit and SETA Database Developer. EZ-IZ is used to interpret children's immunization records. SETA Head Start staff enter the immunizations into the program to verify a child's immunization status prior to enrollment. Just like we use calculators to determine a family's income eligibility, we use EZ-IZ to determine a child's immunizations are current. It's quick and EZ!

    Special Health Services

    Health Services Advisory Committee (HSAC)

Our Health Services Advisory Committee is comprised of SETA Head Start parents, professionals, staff, and other volunteers from the community. HSAC provides a broad range of professional expertise and help promote linkages to existing community resources.

    Tuberculosis Skin Testing

SETA Head Start recognizes the increased incidence of tuberculosis in Sacramento County. Our Tuberculosis Policy requires all parents who volunteer at a SETA Head Start Early Learning Center or participate in a SETA Head Start activity have a Tuberculosis Clearance on file. Also, all Home-Based EHS/HS parents must have TB clearance prior to starting home visits. Children entering the SETA Head Start program are required to have Tuberculosis Clearance prior to enrollment.

    Health Care Planskid in field

At SETA Head Start, we are committed to ensuring the health and safety of our children in and outside of their center. At enrollment, parents are asked a series of questions to indicate whether their child has a pre-existing medical condition (such as asthma or seizures) that may require a health care plan or medication while at school.

Coming to the close of 2010, the dedicated Health/Nutrition Service staff completed over 300 asthma, seizure, as well as, other medical condition care plans. Center staff are provided with quality training (approved by licensed medical personnel) in administering medications to children. For second year/returning students, Second Year Questionnaire's are completed to ensure all information regarding the child's condition and/or medication is current and up-to-date.

    Disaster Preparedness Kits

disaster kitEach SETA Head Start center is equipped with a First Aid kit as well as a Disaster Preparedness kit; both are available to be used in case of an emergency or natural disaster.

To ensure each center is prepared in case of an emergency situation, all SETA Head Start centers undergo Fire Drills every month, and Natural Disaster Drills every other month. Additionally, all center staff are required to be First Aid and CPR certified.

    Elks Vision Screening

eye testOver the years, SETA Head Start and the California Elks Major Project have worked together to perform preventive vision screenings on Preschool Head Start children. Elks Major Project is an organization that provides free vision screenings and provides referrals to children requiring additional services. Vision screenings take place at Head Start centers and are conducted by a certified pediatric screener. In effect, this alliance has allowed thousands of our children to receive the early intervention needed to avert future visual complications.
